Okay. I’m going to be the first to admit it. I’m a wrapper. I’m a real, professional wrapper. Not the hip hop variety- I don’t get paid nearly that much. The baby carrier variety. Carriers, Slings, Wraps – you name it, I’ve rocked it… Yo. The Mod Mum sling (baby slings for stylish modern mums) was basically made with me in mind.

First gold star to Mod Mum for style. We all love baby patterns in nurseries and on little ones, but not so much on grown women. For some reason, the fact that a Mother will be eventually wearing the carrier is not always taken into account. However, when I first saw the fabric folded neatly in it’s paper sleeve, the tiny princess in me did a little dance of joy. The sling I test-drove is covered on one side with trendy retro pink flowers and lined with a toned down, but also very trendy chocolate brown. The fabric looked so delicious I had to put it on and parade it around the house right away. My daughter went from fuss ball tugging at my pants to snug as a bug in a snap. Bonus points for a reversible construction. If I’m looking to make a statement, I can wear the pink flowers out. If I’m looking to stay a little less conspicuous, the flowers turn into the liner and the chocolate brown accents everything in my closet.

Second gold star to Mod Mum for easy sling-ing. My name is Jen and I have a problem. I’m a carrier addict. There, I said it. Now after saying this, I will admit that some of my carriers are nice in theory, but in execution, just take too long to assemble and adjust. Not my Mod Mum sling! After glancing over the instructions on the package, it took seconds to tuck my little bundle into the sling and then on to taking the dog for a walk. The package and website instruct on three different positions to wear the sling. Each position is easily adjusted for snugness by folding and unfolding the portion of the sling that is kept on the shoulder. I do love paper swans, but thankfully there is no origami involved. One “hot dog” fold in the middle of the ring of fabric, a toss over the shoulder and the baby is placed in the pocket. It’s nice not to deal with crazy buckles and clips and ties to switch my little one to nursing mode. My 11 month old curled up happily in the sling and played peek-a-boo with the fabric while finishing her lunch.

Third gold star was scored in the details. Both the inside and outside fabric are thick and linen-esque but have enough stretch to be comfortable. The pieces are stitched together with good thick thread and there seems to be no loose edges. It took work to find the ends of the stitches. There is also a little padded portion on the top edge so little ones have some extra cushioning for chewing or chilling. The shape of the seam on the baby side gives little bums a nook to rest in and keeps them close by. The part of the sling meant for the shoulder is seamless so it lays flat and doesn’t dig in and leave stitch marks deep in your collarbone.

Maximum gold stars are awarded for simple and stunning design. All the fabric you need, all the fashion you want. I get more things done with my daughter in hand and don’t like to take strollers anywhere, so this is perfect. With the sturdy construction I don’t worry about anything suddenly giving out. Since it is all one piece, there is no worry about anything coming lose, unbuckling, untying or any other unwanted “uns” occurring.

Since I’ve awarded a sky full of gold stars to this carrier, I plan on using my Mod Mum sling anywhere I can. It folds up so nicely and fits in all my bags, so I know I will. I’m even considering purchasing a back-up from modmum.com so I can keep one in the car. All of the neat retro and mod fabrics make me want one of each. It’s accessorizing- Mom style. Word up to all my fellow wrappers. These slings are super fresh. Dawg.

Jen lives with her happy little family in Seattle where she drinks tea with honey like it’s going out of style and prides herself on being a laid back parent. Her daughter was born in October 2007 and epitomizes the phrase “Mommy’s Little Monster.
